“…it’s no more mine than anyone’s, and no more yours than anyone’s, I haven’t rope, nor reins, nor anyone handsome to defend me, and I come and go as I please…” Javier Ruibal

Carmen is already a myth which for decades has lived in the collective imagination of Spanish culture - the strength of her female attitude has broken away from the character created by Merimée and today exists in its own right. Her passionate way of life is no longer scandalous and her right to make decisions and live is given expression by many women who, nowadays, hold something of Carmen within themselves. This Carmen, created by Sara Baras, has also moved away from her author, the original story and Bizet himself in his lyrical version, although she is still tied to the tragic love that symbolises her. Carmen, the show, has the strength of its origins with Flamenco’s effortless ability for expression.

In 2000, there was Juana I de Castilla, passionate and intense; in 2002 Mariana Pineda, a fighter and altruist and now, in 2007 comes a free and original Carmen, whose attitude as a woman is synonymous with life. …Three women with one thing in common: love… Three stories which meet in one artist … Sara Baras.
