Buenos Aires, 1860. Set against the background of a port, a group of immigrants from diverse backgrounds rehearse traditional dances like Mazurkas, Tarantelas, Habaneras…A choreographic game starts up between two dancers that spontaneously forms the first steps of a complex, sensual and fascinating dance that will later come to be known as tango.

With ten dancers, an orchestra of six musicians and one singer, this is the first of five scenes that narrate the evolution of tango. It first passes through the bordellos at the start of the twentieth century, then climbs to the grand salons of high society, finally making the jump to Europe and the United States. The show charts tango´s later fade to near-oblivion and relegation to small “milonga” salons after the Second World War, and its subsequent revival starting in the 1970´s thanks to composers like Astor Piazzolla, followed by the explosion of “tango electrónico” and, more recently, the prestige and recognition of tango´s presence in many of the big cities of the world. In 2009, UNESCO declared the tango as part of the world´s “intangible cultural heritage.”

With Tango de burdel, salón y calle, the Ballet Argentino celebrates its 20th anniversary.
