Following its renovation, opera returned to Teatro Cervantes on the 10th of April 1987 with  Così fan tutte in a production of the National Chamber Opera of Lodz. The year after, the Malaga Symphony Orchestra and the Malaga Opera Chorus, created some time before, took part in a production of Madame Butterfly, with Mauricio di Robbio as musical director and Horacio Rodríguez Arágon as stage director. Since then, the Teatro Cervantes programme includes opera, zarzuela and lyric recitals, which are very well-received by the public.

The exhibition O sole! Vita! Eternitá! shows posters, handbills and a large selection of graphic material of the best-known pieces of the operatic and zarzelua repertoire programmed during this thirty-year period, with top figures of the international opera panorama such as Carlos Álvarez, Juan Diego Flórez, Eva Marton, Kathleen Cassello, Montserrat Caballé, Mirella Freni, Gregory Kunde, Teresa Berganza, Ainhoa Arteta, Barbara Hendricks, Inva Mula, Mariella Devia and Jaime Aragall, and conductors  that include Miguel Roa, Octav Calleya, Manuel Hernández-Silva, Oliver Dohnanyi, Enrique García Asensio, Eugene Kohn, Bertrand de Billy, Giuliano Carella, Odón Alonso, Daniel Lipton, Antonello Allemandi, Miquel Ortega and Klaus Weise.
